Case Studies
Floorspan Contracts manufacture and install 150mm and 225mm deep prestressed concrete beams, solid and ‘hollowcore’ wideslab planks as well as pre-cast stairs and landings at our modern casting facility in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.
Case 1 – Wisbech, Cambridgeshire June 2008
Installation of precast Wideslab planks.
The site is located at the bottom of a narrow residential street and is surrounded by occupied properties. The initial site visit showed a ‘city’ crane would be necessary to access the small site and lift the planks into position.
By liaising with the developer a lift plan was devised and a full method statement and risk assessment prepared. Throughout the lift our appointed person for lifting operations was present on site to ensure a safe system of work was applied.
Due to our planning and efforts the job was completed efficiently and without incident.
Case 2 – Central Peterborough, Cambridgeshire August 2009
Installation of precast Wideslab planks.
The site is situated on the corner of a main arterial road and a busy residential street in central Peterborough. The building footprint covered the whole site leaving no room for access and storage of materials. There were also a number of telephone wires crossing the site and the area where the crane was to operate.
After several site visits and meetings with the local authority and the crane contractor it was decided that we would have to block one lane of the residential street for the crane and delivery vehicles to park in position. A nearby bus stop was also suspended for the duration of the lift.
On the day of the lift we arrived at site early to block one lane with road cones and appropriate signage. We also cordoned off the footpath with marker tape to ensure the safety of pedestrians. The contractor managed the passing traffic and pedestrians throughout the process. Floorspan Contracts also provided a banksman to be on the ground at all times.
The floor was installed successfully with minimal, controlled disruption to traffic and pedestrians with safety the primary consideration. Our traffic management provisions also drew positive comment from the Local Authority who visited the site during the lift.
Floorspan Contracts can apply this hands on approach to your job to ensure a smooth, safe installation.
Case 3 – Oxford November 2009
Installation of Residential Beam and Block Floor
Due to the customers tight programme he requested that we did not visit site to take ‘as built’ measurements but instead he would confirm the sizes and we would prepare the beams in advance so that as soon as the foundation was built we could install the floor.
By liaising closely with the customer we were able to communicate exactly what we required from him in terms of vehicular access, working space and general attendance and also what he should expect from us. The customer checked site dimensions and also sent us sketches of the site so we could plan what plant and equipment would be required.
Despite the fact that we had not visited site the job was completed successfully and in accordance with the customer’s tight programme.
We received the following e mail thanking us for our efforts.
Good morning,
Just a note to indicate that the work carried out was satisfactory and well organized, clearly a good reference for my other projects.
Thank you for your valued service.
Regards A F
