A Day in the Life of an HGV Driver & Crane Operator at Floorspan
When people think of construction, they often picture cranes lifting heavy loads or workers assembling structures on-site. But behind every successful installation is the work of skilled HGV drivers and crane operators who ensure materials arrive safely and on time. At Floorspan, our HGV drivers play a crucial role in delivering and installing precast concrete products efficiently.
In this blog, we follow Ben, one of our experienced HGV drivers and crane operators, as he takes us through a typical workday.
Morning Routine: Vehicle Checks & Preparation
Every workday at Floorspan starts with a thorough HGV vehicle check. Safety is our top priority, so Ben spends 15 minutes inspecting his truck, ensuring everything is in top condition before hitting the road. A well-maintained HGV is essential for keeping deliveries on schedule and preventing unexpected breakdowns.
The first task of the day? Fuelling up the HGV. Today, it took 220 litres of fuel to prepare for a full day of deliveries and installations. With everything in order, it’s time to head to the first destination.
On-Site Installation at Cowbit
The first stop is an eFloor installation at Cowbit. Ben works with an experienced installation crew that makes the process smooth and efficient. The eFloor system is designed for quick and easy installation, and with the right team in place, the job is completed in no time.
As an HGV driver, working closely with site teams is key. Strong communication and coordination ensure that materials are delivered exactly when and where they’re needed.
Midday Delivery to Ramsey
Once the eFloor installation is complete, it’s back on the road for the next delivery—this time to Ramsey, where Ben drops off blocks for another ongoing project. This is a perfect example of how an HGV driver’s role extends beyond just transportation; precision and timing are crucial for keeping construction schedules on track.
Final Stop: Loading for Tomorrow’s Install
To wrap up the day, Ben returns to the Floorspan yard to prepare for the next project. Today, he loads 156 beams onto the truck, ready for delivery to Brancaster in the morning.
As an HGV driver and crane operator, planning ahead is essential. Ensuring materials are loaded correctly and securely means a smooth start for the next workday.
Life as an HGV Driver at Floorspan
Being an HGV driver isn’t just about driving—it’s about problem-solving, teamwork, and keeping projects moving efficiently. Whether it’s delivering materials, operating cranes, or working alongside skilled site teams, every day brings something new.
